A small spray-tan touch-up can sometimes soften a light missed area, but adding more colour over a patchy or heavily developed tan can make the contrast worse. First work out whether you are seeing an application gap, normal development, product sitting on dry skin or fading that has become uneven.

Why a spray tan can look uneven
Patchiness can happen when colour develops differently across dry and hydrated areas, clothing or water contacts the skin too early, perspiration creates marks, or old tan was not evenly removed before the appointment. Hands, feet, elbows, knees and ankles often need particular care because their texture differs from larger areas of the body.
A tan can also look temporarily inconsistent while developing. Follow the instructions for the actual formula used and complete the advised first rinse before judging the final colour.
When a light touch-up may help
A careful correction may be reasonable when one small area is clearly lighter and the surrounding colour is otherwise even. Use a compatible gradual-tan or the product recommended by your spray-tan provider, apply very sparingly and blend beyond the edge of the pale area.
Build slowly. It is easier to add a little more later than remove a dark patch. Wash your hands after applying product and take extra care around fingers, wrists, ankles and feet.
When adding more product may make it worse
Do not keep layering tan over areas that are already dark, rough or blotchy. Extra colour can catch on dry skin and emphasise the difference. Applying a full second coat to “even everything out” can also deepen areas that were already correct.
If large sections are fading at different rates, a new layer may create several tones rather than one even result. In that situation, gentle maintenance followed by an even restart is often more predictable.
What to do with dark or dry patches
Moisturise regularly with a product that suits your skin and the tanning formula. Avoid aggressive scrubbing, harsh exfoliation or picking at dry skin; these can create irritation and sharper borders.
As the tan fades, gentle washing and light, even exfoliation may help the remaining colour lift gradually. Do not try to erase one dark spot in a single session. If your skin is sore, inflamed or broken, stop applying tanning products and seek appropriate advice.
Make-up can be the simplest short-term fix
For an event the same day, a carefully blended body makeup may be more controllable than adding another developing tan. Test colour and transfer first, keep it away from clothing where possible and remember that water or perspiration may affect the finish.
When starting fresh is better
Consider allowing the colour to fade and rebooking when the unevenness is widespread, the existing tan is heavily built up, or the skin is dry enough that more product will cling. Starting with a clean, evenly prepared base usually produces a more consistent result than repeated spot correction.
