A professional pedicure can keep feet and toenails looking neat for several weeks, but the polish and the pedicure do not “expire” on the same day. Colour may remain intact while the nail grows out, and skin care may need attention sooner. Rebooking depends on the polish type, footwear, activity, nail growth and the condition of the feet.
How long does pedicure polish last?
Regular toenail polish often looks presentable for two to four weeks because toes experience less hand-like washing and impact. Gel polish may retain gloss and resist chips for longer. Growth at the cuticle and the condition of the nail can become the deciding factors even when colour remains.
These are broad expectations rather than guarantees. Swimming, closed shoes, sport, picking and nail condition can shorten wear.
Regular polish versus gel on toes
| Feature | Regular polish | Gel polish |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | Air-dries and needs post-appointment care | Cures under a compatible lamp |
| Wear | Good for flexible, shorter-term colour | Usually more chip-resistant and glossy |
| Removal | Simple with ordinary remover | Correct soak-off or professional removal |
| Commitment | Easy to change | Suited to clients wanting longer wear |
Gel should not be peeled. Removing it incorrectly can lift surface nail layers and leave the plate rough or thin.
How often should you rebook?
Many clients choose a pedicure every four to six weeks, but there is no compulsory schedule. Rebook sooner if regular polish has chipped and you want it refreshed, or later if nails and skin remain comfortable and you do not mind visible growth.
Toenails should not be allowed to become so long that they press against shoes. People with diabetes, reduced circulation, reduced sensation or significant foot problems should obtain healthcare advice about safe foot and nail care.
Why pedicures wear differently
- Natural nail-growth rate
- Open versus closed footwear
- Running, sport and repeated shoe pressure
- Swimming and water exposure
- Polish system and application
- Picking, peeling or impact
- Dryness and friction around the feet
How to help a pedicure last
- Allow regular polish adequate drying time.
- Wear shoes that do not press tightly on the toes.
- Moisturise feet regularly but avoid creating slippery soles.
- Do not use toenails as tools or pick lifted colour.
- Use footwear in communal wet areas.
- Follow the technician’s aftercare and removal advice.
What a cosmetic pedicure can and cannot do
A beauty pedicure can shape suitable nails, care for surrounding skin and apply polish. It does not diagnose or treat fungal infection, ingrown nails, warts, open wounds or circulation problems. Covering a suspicious nail with colour may delay appropriate assessment.
Postpone and seek suitable care if you have significant pain, swelling, discharge, spreading redness, an open wound or unexplained nail changes. Do not ask a beauty therapist to cut into an ingrown nail.
When to remove polish
Remove polish when it is substantially lifted, when the nail needs inspection or before reapplication if the system requires it. Leaving a small chip is mostly cosmetic; leaving lifted product and picking beneath it can create damage or trap moisture.
Correct removal also gives the technician an opportunity to view the natural nail. Persistent thickening, discolouration or separation should be medically assessed rather than repeatedly covered.
Planning before a holiday or event
Book close enough for fresh colour but leave sensible time if you have sensitive skin or are trying a new product. For regular polish, bring open-toe footwear where practical and avoid rushing into tight shoes. If swimming or long periods in footwear are planned, ask which option suits your priorities.

Frequently asked questions
Why does toenail polish last longer than fingernail polish?
Toenails usually experience less washing, chemical exposure and direct use, although shoes and sport can still create pressure and chips.
Can I leave gel polish on toes until it grows out?
Do not ignore heavy grow-out, lifting or nail changes. Follow professional maintenance and removal advice rather than peeling it or leaving compromised product indefinitely.
How soon can I wear shoes after a pedicure?
Gel is cured at the appointment; regular polish needs more care while it hardens. Follow the technician’s timing advice and avoid tight pressure.
Should I get a pedicure with an ingrown toenail?
A painful or inflamed ingrown nail needs appropriate podiatry or medical care. A cosmetic pedicure is not treatment.
