A Reformer mat should be cleaned according to its material and manufacturer instructions—not with the strongest disinfectant you can find. Routine care is usually simple: remove surface moisture and marks promptly, use a compatible mild cleaning method, dry the mat fully and store it without trapping dampness.
Before cleaning, identify whether your mat is microfibre, rubber-backed, cork or vegan leather. Products that are suitable for one finish may damage another.
Start with the care label
The manufacturer’s directions should be your source of truth. Check whether the mat can be machine washed, which water temperature is permitted and whether sprays, alcohol, bleach, oils or tumble drying are prohibited.
MoveActive’s published care advice for its microfibre Reformer mats includes wiping with mild detergent, folding with the top side outward and cold machine washing when needed. It advises against tumble drying, ironing, dry cleaning and bleach.
Routine cleaning after class
- Shake off loose debris.
- Use a clean, lightly damp cloth with the approved cleaner.
- Work gently across the used surface rather than soaking one area.
- Wipe away remaining residue.
- Open the mat fully and allow it to dry before packing it away.
A heavily fragranced spray can leave residue and may not be compatible with the material. More liquid does not mean a cleaner mat.
When deeper cleaning is needed
If the manufacturer permits machine washing, follow the stated cycle and temperature exactly. Wash the mat separately or with suitable items so hardware and rough fabrics do not damage it. Never assume every printed or bonded Reformer mat is machine washable.
For cork or vegan-leather styles, use only the care directions supplied for that construction. Do not copy the microfibre method simply because the products share a category name.
Drying matters as much as washing
Heat can affect adhesives, backing and shape. Air dry the mat away from excessive heat and make sure both sides are dry. Do not leave it folded while damp or place it immediately into a closed carry pouch.
How to store and transport it
- Fold or roll it only as directed.
- Avoid leaving it compressed under heavy equipment.
- Keep it away from sharp objects and leaking toiletries.
- Remove it from the bag after class if it is damp.
- Store it in a dry space out of harsh prolonged sunlight.
Cleaning your mat at a studio
Follow the studio’s equipment and hygiene process as well as the mat manufacturer’s advice. A personal mat does not replace cleaning shared equipment where required. Avoid spraying cleaner over nearby machines or other clients’ belongings.
