Good spray tan preparation is mostly about creating a clean, even canvas. Exfoliate in advance, complete hair removal early enough for the skin to settle, arrive without oily products, and wear loose dark clothing afterwards. Then follow the specific development and first-rinse timing given for the formula used at your appointment.
A spray tan colours the outermost skin surface with dihydroxyacetone, usually called DHA. It does not provide the UV protection of sunscreen, and a darker-looking skin tone after the appointment is not a licence to spend longer in the sun.
Your preparation timeline
One to two days before
Exfoliate the areas to be tanned, paying attention to drier skin around elbows, knees and ankles. The goal is smoothness, not redness. Avoid aggressive scrubbing that leaves the skin tender.
Plan waxing or shaving before the day of the appointment where possible, allowing time for temporary redness to settle. Hair removal immediately before tanning can leave the skin reactive and may affect how evenly the solution sits.
If this is your first spray tan for an event, book with enough breathing room to learn how your chosen shade and development time work for you. A trial before a wedding or major occasion can remove guesswork.
On the day
Shower as advised, then avoid body oils, rich moisturisers, deodorant and perfume on the areas being sprayed unless your provider has given different instructions. These products may form a barrier or interact with the tan.
Bring loose, dark clothing and simple footwear. Tight waistbands, bras, leggings and closed shoes can rub areas while the solution is developing. Choose something you can put on without dragging fabric tightly across the skin.
What happens at a professional spray tan?
Your provider should discuss the shade direction, the event or reason for tanning, your skin’s recent condition and when you need to rinse. You may be given disposable garments or choose your own coverage. Barrier cream may be applied sparingly to very dry areas.
During application, follow positioning instructions so the mist reaches each area evenly. Cancer SA notes that the evidence for inhaled DHA is limited and advises preventing contact with eyes, lips and mucous membranes and avoiding inhalation. A properly ventilated setting and following protective directions are sensible safeguards.
The first hours after your tan
Development times differ between solutions, so use the exact instructions from your appointment rather than a generic time found online. Before the first rinse:
- avoid exercise, swimming and activities that cause heavy perspiration;
- keep the skin dry unless advised otherwise;
- avoid rubbing or trying on tight clothing;
- blot accidental water marks gently rather than wiping.
The cosmetic guide colour that you see immediately is not necessarily the final shade. Some will wash away at the first rinse while the DHA result continues to settle.
Your first rinse
Rinse at the instructed time using lukewarm water. Do not assume leaving a rapid-developing product on for longer will create a better result. Pat the skin dry with a towel rather than rubbing.
Once your provider says moisturiser is appropriate, regular hydration can help the colour fade more evenly. Choose gentle cleansing and avoid repeated aggressive exfoliation if you want to maintain the result.
How to help a spray tan fade evenly
All sunless tans fade as the coloured surface cells naturally shed. Long hot baths, frequent swimming, rough scrubs and strong exfoliating products can speed that process. Moisturising consistently and treating the skin gently can make the transition look more even.
When you are ready for the next appointment, allow the previous tan to fade and remove residual patches without scrubbing the skin raw. Tell your provider if areas tend to grip very dark or fade quickly so preparation can be adjusted.
A spray tan is not sun protection
The Cancer Council advises that a fake tan does not protect skin from UV radiation. Continue using broad-spectrum sunscreen as directed, protective clothing, shade and other recommended sun-protection measures. Do not use a spray tan as a base tan or substitute for sun safety.
When to postpone
Contact the studio before attending if your skin is sunburnt, broken, actively irritated or reacting to a recent product. If you have a known sensitivity or breathing concern, ask about the products and application setup before booking.

After:

- avoid picking at uneven areas.
Why choose a professional spray tan?
A professional appointment offers more than colour from a bottle. Shade selection, careful application and guidance on preparation and development time can help create a more even, polished result for an event, holiday, photographs or simply because you enjoy a sun-kissed look. It also provides cosmetic colour without intentionally exposing skin to ultraviolet radiation to tan.
A spray tan is cosmetic only: unless a separate product is specifically labelled with verified SPF, the colour does not protect skin from the sun. Continue using appropriate sunscreen, clothing and shade. Explore Bodi Boutique’s Waxing & Spray Tanning services or select an appointment through the beauty booking calendar.
