Low-Impact vs Low-Intensity Exercise: What Is the Difference?

Share this post on:

Low-impact and low-intensity describe different things. Low impact refers to the forces created as the body meets the ground; low intensity means the effort feels relatively easy for you. An exercise can be one, both or neither.

What low impact means

Walking, cycling, controlled strength work and most Pilates exercises are typically low impact because they avoid repeated jumping and landing. Low impact does not mean ineffective, pain-free for every person or automatically easy.

What low intensity means

Intensity is relative to your current capacity. At a low intensity, breathing is comfortable and conversation is easy. Increase resistance, speed, range, duration or complexity and a low-impact movement can become demanding.

ExampleImpactPossible intensity
Easy walkLowLow
Fast uphill walkLowModerate or vigorous
Heavy controlled squatLowHigh
Gentle skippingHigherLow to moderate

Why the distinction matters

If you avoid jumping for comfort or on professional advice, you may still train hard through cycling, rowing, resistance exercises or continuous low-impact circuits. If you need an easy recovery session, simply removing jumps is not enough; total effort also needs to come down.

How to adjust a class

Reduce impact by stepping instead of hopping, using more support or changing position. Adjust intensity through load, pace, range, rest and duration. At Bodi Boutique, an option is designed to preserve the purpose of the exercise—not label somebody as less capable.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using sweat, soreness or shaking as the only proof that a session worked.
  • Copying another participant’s spring or weight without considering the exercise goal.
  • Holding your breath to maintain a pace that is no longer controlled.
  • Changing several training variables at once, then being unable to identify what caused fatigue.
  • Assuming a modification is a permanent limitation rather than a tool for that day.
