A good facial appointment begins before you reach the treatment room. You do not need an elaborate preparation ritual, but your therapist needs accurate information about your skin, current products and recent treatments.
Afterwards, the priority is to follow the specific instructions for the facial you received. A gentle hydrating facial and a stronger exfoliating treatment may require different care.
Why choose a professional facial?
A professional facial offers more than a reason to follow an aftercare list. Depending on the treatment selected and how your skin presents on the day, it may include professional cleansing, exfoliation, hydration and products chosen to support a refreshed look and comfortable skin feel.
It can also provide something a home routine does not: dedicated time for a beauty therapist to tailor the experience within her professional scope while you stop and relax. A facial complements consistent home skincare rather than replacing it, and preparing properly helps you get more from the treatment you have chosen. What to do before a facial
Keep your routine predictable
Avoid experimenting with several unfamiliar active products immediately before the appointment. If a product causes irritation, it becomes difficult to tell whether your skin is reacting to that product or the treatment.
Write down your skincare
Tell your therapist about retinoids, exfoliating acids, prescription creams, recent waxing, cosmetic procedures and known allergies or sensitivities. Bring product names or photographs if that is easier than remembering every ingredient.
Be clear about your goal
“I want my skin to feel comfortable and hydrated” is more useful than asking for every possible treatment at once. Your immediate goal, skin condition, available time and tolerance should shape the appointment.
Do not conceal irritation
Sunburn, broken skin, an active rash, eye infection or a strong unexplained reaction may mean the service needs to be adjusted or postponed. A beauty therapist should not diagnose the problem.
Should you arrive without makeup?
Makeup can generally be removed during a facial, but arriving with minimal makeup can leave more appointment time for consultation and treatment. Do not aggressively scrub your face beforehand to make it feel “extra clean”.
What to expect afterwards
Your skin may feel different depending on the treatment. Some facials are designed to feel calming and hydrating; others may leave temporary warmth or sensitivity. Ask what is normal for the service and what would warrant follow-up.
How to care for your skin after a facial
Follow treatment-specific instructions
Do not combine generic internet aftercare with professional directions and assume the strictest rule is always best. Use the cleanser, moisturiser and sun protection approach recommended for the treatment.
Pause unnecessary irritation
Do not pick, squeeze or scrub freshly treated skin. Ask when to restart retinoids, acids, physical exfoliation and other active products.
Protect your skin from the sun
Australia’s ultraviolet exposure makes daily sun protection relevant throughout the year. Follow Cancer Council advice on shade, clothing, hats, sunglasses and sunscreen rather than relying on skincare alone.
Plan heat and exercise thoughtfully
Depending on the facial, your therapist may advise temporarily avoiding intense exercise, hot showers, steam or sauna use. Confirm the appropriate interval for your exact treatment.
When should you book another facial?
There is no universal monthly rule. Your goal, treatment type, skin tolerance, home routine and budget all matter. Our guide to how often to get a facial provides a practical framework.

Frequently asked questions
Can I wear makeup after a facial?
It depends on the treatment and your skin. Ask your therapist when makeup can be reapplied and keep applicators clean.
Should I exfoliate before a facial?
Do not automatically add exfoliation. Your therapist needs to know what you have used and may prefer the skin not to be freshly irritated.
What if my skin reacts afterwards?
Contact the provider. Seek appropriate healthcare for severe, worsening or concerning symptoms.
